sudden failure of DIU

I have a 97 CSE with only 85,000 miles on it. Recently, when putting the "pedal to the metal", the motor would stumble a bit (for a second or two), then recover and zoom away just fine with nice turbo response. Eventually the CEL came on, and a scan with the OBD-II indicated a misfiring in cylinder #3. I cleared the code and ignored the "problem" which did not re-occur (also stopped putting pedal to the metal).
Many weeks later, with the car apparently running just fine, the motor would not start after having been turned off during a stop on the way home. My kids and I checked the fuel pump, found it to be operating. Fortunately we were a short hike through the woods to our house. We returned with a spare DIU. Plugged that in and all is well.
Just goes to show that the DIU can fail with little or no warning. This is the second time this has happened to me (the other time was in my now gone 92 9000t). We could have been far far away from home (just came back to Maryland from Vermont, but fortunately we went in the 97 CSE). In the future, I think I will heed what others have advised, which is to bring along a spare DIU on the really long trips.
