Well, I've never seen an alternator leak - there is nothing inside to leak.
Since you've got the alternator out, you can peek in and inspect the commutator. If it doesn't look badly worn, just replace the VR. There are other parts in the Alternator that can fail at any time - an example being the diode block - that can die with age.
Here's the other thought - how much longer do you expect to own the car? If you're in it for the long haul, replace the alternator. A VR will cost about $50. Last time I bought an alternator, I got one (mail order, rebuilt) for $135. And that includes the VR. Since pulling an alternator isn't much fun, for $85 more you've got nothing to worry about. But if you don't expect to keep the car more than a couple of more years, and the commutator looks OK, just replace the VR.
