If you were able to get the old part back, you could do a postmortem on it to see which of the contacts failed.
It's possible you have something amiss in one of the circuits and it's drawing too much current through the switch, and overheating the contact, causing premature failure.
For example, if the grey-white connection to the grey wire went bad, I'd check the impedance of fuse 31 to ground to see if something in the lighting circuit is drawing too much.
The weight of keys dangling from the ignition would wear out the lock cylinder, but it really shouldn't have any effect on the ignition switch itself.
