Ari, Great job on the instructions. Thank you. I replaced the VR on my 1994 9000 CSE 2.3 non-turbo automatic from the side using your very thorough (and helpful) instructions. VR removal from the top proved problematic because of the intake manifold being in the way. From the bottom was problematic because I only had car ramps and couldn't get enough leverage. From the side with the fender inner liner removed was just right. In the end, I decided discretion is the better part of valor and replaced the whole alternator. Since it was 13 years old and the car has 188,000 miles on it, it just made sense. My local auto supply store gave me credit for the $31.00 VR. Bosch alternators last a long time and my experience tells me that the bearings almost never go on them, however having a 13 year old alternator, especially here in New England, didn't inspire a lot of confidence. I recommend that if you are poor, (and who isn't with all these crazy Saab repairs) replace the VR first at a cost of about $31.00. If you want better peace of mind, shell out the $185 for the alternator and $30 for a new belt while you are at it. Again, thank you very much, the local Saab dealerships I have dealt with are thieves when it comes to such repairs. With my DIY savings I can now take a nice trip to Europe, heh heh. Maybe, Sweden.
