This is a 97 aero with 160k on the clock. Just recently I've been having problems with 3rd gear. Going up through the gears 1,2,3,4,5 I dont have an issue with grinding. It only seems to happen when I'm crusing on the highway say 2500rpm (about 70ish mph). and I shift down into 3rd gear. Note I dont use 3rd gear to shift down to if I'm going much over 75mph), but I've gotten it to grind when I've been going as slow as 60-65 on the highway in 5th.
Maybe 1 out of 20 times the gears will grind very briefly. I take it easy on the transmission and dont force shifts, but i have pushed it into gear through the noise successfully. The noise is very short, maybe 1/4 of a second (but definitely gear grinding) and holding the shifter at the brink of engaging 3rd when it makes the grinding noise doesn't change the duration. I havent gotten this noise to occur when i'm going from 4th to 3rd, but I also dont shift down from 4th as frequently as I do from 5th.
Any ideas? I'm hoping it could be a linkage problem, or maybe something is up with the clutch. When I shift down to 3rd on the highway the clutch is always matted on the floor, which i cant say is always true when I'm shifting up through the gears. But the pedal is strong and engaging very close to the top of the travel range anyway.
Oh, I also changed the manual transmission fluid about 10k ago. Flushed and refilled with the mtf00063 saab spec synthetic off of eeuro.
