And shine it into the EDU - if the display is visible, look for the blank
dot at the bottom left of the clock module - this is the photosensor.

Shine the flashlight directly into it at point blank - and if the EDU
doesn't brighten up, due to it's sudden lack of illumination, it is
likely the photocell is shot - and it is a $1.75 fix that takes 1/2
hour, a little soldering, and WAY less work than dash disassembly !!!

I have posted and reposted and referred to my previous post each time
someone asks this when I have seen it - it is one of my favorite DIY
repairs taught to me by this very board.
(One of my re/posts on this is here:
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9000/index.html?bID=199142 )

The bulb change is quite a lesson in sequential disassembly/reassembly
and for the first time dash opener make sure you allow at least a full
afternoon and preferably have lots of patience and a good, small, cool
light to tuck in and make 100% certain ALL the connectors go back on
EXACTLY as they came off, especially the vacuum line for the boost
gauge if you have a turbo car with one.
(AND - make certain you get the hidden screw out of the top of the
instrument cluster when removing the dash top or you'll have reason
to cry when it tears out instead !)

Good Luck !
