I did this to my 92 9000, the steering wheel had up and down play, this was a non-adjustable (telescoping) column. Although it seems like the play is caused by the bearing near the steering wheel, it's most likely the bearing about 18" down, just above where the column shaft meets the first universal joint. Pull the steering wheel and column covers, unscrew and leave dangling by the wires the stalks, undo and remove the pinch bolt/nut (17mm on mine), this will allow you to remove the piece that the pinch bolt goes into. Working from the footwell, just above that first U joint are 2 10mm bolts, they come out and assuming the shaft is loosened at the U joint, the bearing housing (held by the 10mm bolts) will be loose, withdraw it through the top. I think you buy the bearing/bracket all as one piece, I used a chunk of garden hose (search for Steve Brown on this site, he did a write-up on it), works great. Email me if you need more info. Pretty simple job really.
