Engine oil performs many functions. A thin film of oil between journals and bearings minimizes friction and prevent metal to metal contact. All other internal engine parts are protected either by pressure or splash lubrication. Your engine is cooled in two ways. Coolant circulates through the block and head and transfers this heat to he atmosphere via the radiator. As the oil is circulated throught the engine it picks up heat and transfers this heat to the atmosphere via the oil cooler. If either the coolant or oil are below the proper level each liter of liquid must transfer more heat than the designers intended. Oil also cleans engine components and keeps dirt and other contaminants in suspension so that they can leave the engine when the oil is drained. Byproducts of combustion tend to introduce acid into the oil. Additives neutalize this acid. The lower the oil level the higher the concentration of acid and other contaminants in the oil. I could go on and on but I hope I have delivered the message.
Some newer cars have larger oil sumps. The current 4 cylinder 9-3 Sport Sedan has a six liter oil capacity.
