You might want to try making this tool:

Obtain the following from a hardware store:

1 - 1/2" diameter THREADED ROD.

4 - NUTs that screw onto above threaded rod.

2 - threaded EYEBOLTs with nuts. Eye fits over THREADED ROD.

PREPARATION:
A. Screw each threaded EYEBOLT nut up to the eye.
B. Hacksaw off the EYEBOLT threads below the nut.

ASSEMBLY:
C. Run one NUT 6 inches down the THREADED ROD.
D. Slide one EYEBOLT over the THREADED ROD.
E. Run a second NUT down THREADED ROD to the bottom EYEBOLT.
(Help keeps the EYEBOLT perpendicular.)
F. Hook the bottom EYEBOLT nut under the lower groove,
(The EYEBOLT nut will fit behind the lower groove.)
G. Lift up the THREADED ROD.
H. Slide the second EYEBOLT over the THREADED ROD.
(This EYEBOLT nut will fit behind the upper groove.)
I. Run a third NUT down the THREADED ROD to the top EYEBOLT.
J. Run a fourth NUT down THREADED ROD to the third NUT.
K. Hold the third nut and tighten the fourth NUT against it.

OPERATION:
L. Hold the first NUT with an open end wrench.
M. Turn the fourth NUT clockwise to compress the damper.

(Instead of a threaded rod, I used a 5-1/2" bolt. Unfortunately the threads were only 1 inch long. I heartily recommend the THREADED ROD.)

Good luck!

Thanks,
-Senor Don
