Oldsaab: I changed one, due to rust.

I'm with you, but I had to do this one since it rusted through at one end, on a New England C900.
My observation: The can on the C900 at least is the size of a coffee can. The amount of filtering media inside is massive, and there's more than two or three cars' lifetimes worth of filtering area there.
I still have that old rusty can kicking around and one of these days I'll Sawzall it open and report on the appearance of the paper inside.
But there is one other reason to change these: If you absolutely know you got water in your gas. On the C900 at least, the filters sit sideways and act like a trap, where the water just sits in the lower half and keeps letting little droplets out into the fuel over time.
But one can do as I did, drain filter, shake all liquid out, then hook a vacuum cleaner up to it and suck dry air through it for 15 minutes or so. That car has run fine ever since.
