In my SK Wayne 'murican size socket set that Dad gave me when I was 16, I have a 7/8ths (?) or so six point 3/8ths drive socket with black gorilla tape wrapped around the side. I use that socket on every strut replacement. Its about the only time I open that box of sockets anymore.
Clamp a Vice Grip on the outside of the socket over the tape, near the top where the metal is thicker and so you can sink the socket down onto the nut, hold that stationary and then use a hex key to turn the damper rod until the nut bottoms out. I do this when the spring compressor is applied, but with the wheel on the ground, you should be able to do it.
If its not the nut, your strut bearing may be bad.
