Hello,
From my experiences in 3 different 9000's pre 91...
When you first start the car, the voltage displayed is a steady number on the low side...
when I cycle through the info button on the display, the next time the voltage read out comes along, it is a higher number... and it is fluctuating slightly.
In my current 9000, I have a 115amp alternator and also the external voltage regulator upgrade...
my voltage when driving even with ALL of my accessories turned on is 14.5 about, never drips below 14
I'm talking seat heaters, heater on high, defroster, high beams... everything... power windows and seat motors might drop it for a second.. but not much.
I even have an aftermarket stereo with a 1000 watt amp. The amp has 3 30amp fuses in it... requiring me to use a power capacitor in the trunk as well for the power...
Bottom line... get an external voltage regulator kit from where you can find one. I bought mine from Dave at Group9performance, he posts as 900Aero on here i think.
His kit comes with everything you need and even new brushes...
The external voltage regulator itself is adjustable but... you can replace it with a fixed one, like i did, for a ford truck!!!!
Fixed at 14.4... the part costs under $20 at autozone... so when the voltage regulator fails, you can pick one up and replace it without touching the alternator... as the wiring harness on daves kit lets you put it up high.
my 2 cents on all that :)
