I've never seen a rusted rear muffler where the resonator (aka 'middle muffler') wasn't also rusted internally. When I need to replace an exhaust bit, I just replace everything aft of the catalytic converter - long pipe to the resonator, and the rear muffler.
Also, I've never had much success in getting a muffler off without damaging the resonator. However, you could try. Jack up and support the left rear of the car, and take off the left rear wheel. If you can unbolt the joint, great. I wouldn't use a torch - that lumpy thing just behind the joint is the gas tank. And it isn't very torch-friendly.
What I normally do is with the car jacked up, unbolt the pipe where it meets the catalytic converter. I then use a sawzall to cut the pipe where it goes up over the rear axle. With the wheel off, it's pretty accessable. You can then take the two pieces out easily.
To install, I put the resonator into place, and using a jack, hold it in place. I put the hangers on, and then bolt it up at the cat side. I then hang the muffler on the hangers, and bolt it up to the resonator pipe.
Basically, the hardest part is getting the bolts at the cat out, followed by cutting the pipe between the muffler and the resonator. If you do both parts at once, putting in new (clean, unrusted) parts takes no time at all.
