The engine changed significantly between 1993 and 1994 (shorter block, relocated crank position sensor) so perhaps SAAB rerouted some of the wiring at the same time. If you are going to use the OEM sensor, you should still have the OEM plug in its normal place and need to get the right sensor for the model year car that you have (you didn't say).
I don't know why the Mustang sensor didn't work out for you, I have had good luck using the exact same sensors (for the two in the front, pre-cat) on my Audi for three of four years already - splicing technique perhaps? A lot of mechanics are leery of splicing, I've had good luck with four Bosch sensors so far. Did you find my link to an Audiworld chain about splicing?
