If BMW made "practical" cars, they would need to be price-competitive with the Asian cars. Instead, they have figured out how to build a cache that can support pricing their cars at a huge premium for some extra manufacturing cost (much less than the price premium). I don't see that they needed to go to Berlin asking for handouts from their government, so apparently this works pretty well for them. In addition, the large amount of dealer-only service required keeps their dealer network in the black.
