They used it until only a few months ago. The B235 variants had been the sole engine of US 9-5s since 2004. They also had the B205 in Europe (2 liter de-stroked variant). When the original 9-5 production line closed down, the last chapter was closed on a motor that can directly trace its heritage to the 99 EMS of the early 70s, and even the Ricardo/Triumph motor that preceded that. 37 years.
The B234 went through gradual changes over the years. The early versions share quite a lot with the slant-4 that originally came in the Classic 900 and 9000. When Saab developed the NG 900, they had to shorten up the engine package, and the 9000 also got those changes.
When Saab developed the 9-5, they again refined the motor into the B235. Unlike with the B234, the "5" doesn't refer to any particular # of shafts. They needed to distinguish it from the B234, and 5 is the next #, so... (there was even a B206 or 236... That one had two cams, but no balance shafts, and they couldn't use B202 again, so...).
