As I have written before, every single older car that I have owned (including my current 9000) has had at least one oil pressure sender switch die, sometimes by developing a massive leak - they are typically located in the oil circuit at what should be the location with the highest oil pressure. A leaking switch could possibly be the cause of your loss of oil pressure and subsequent engine damage; a non-functional switch would not have alerted you to a low oil pressure situation. Amazing how a $5 part can be so critical.
FYI, on the 1994+ cars, it's located up the side of the engine block, near the middle, within two inches of the intake manifold.
