Surprisingly, to me at least. These Bosch Starters seem to soldier on against all odds. Few actually fail outright. Given that it's a genuine PITA to re and re these things on the later 9000's (early 9000's only took 5 mins max..with practice) Often it's just a lube issue, the things get so crusted with dust/debris that the drive gear simply won't slide forward enough to engage he Ring gear. Check and lube the pore thing.
A problem with a ring gear is a Memorable thing indeed. I've only seen one in a LOT of years and the sound alone was horrific. Low probability that your ring gear is shot or even damaged... mercifully, as they are Pricey.
