Hate to say it, but that makes a huge difference. In my experience, if a northern car doesn't show rust today, it will soon. It may be deep rot in the shock towers, or it may be surface rust around the wheelwells. The trim there grabs crud and holds it tight against the fenders.
For a 1997 Aero with 150k and a 5-speed (if Auto, I'd give $2k for it MAX, regardless of condition. I just don't like 'em.), I'd MAYBE give $4,500 if it were from the south, and pristine. Exterior, seats, interior, wheels, etc. with recent major maintenance and records. Again, it'd have to be basically perfect.
Being a northern car, and assuming everything else is ready to go, I'd MAYBE give $3,500 for it. I'd really have to like it for $3,500. My southern Aero was in pretty damn decent shape when I brought it to Vermont in 2006. Since then, its started to rot around the windshield frame, and around both rear wheelwells.
If they'll REALLY let you look at things closely, bring an 8mm socket with a nut driver handle, and remove the wheelwell trim to expose the fender edges underneath that trim. If its 100% perfectly clean, meh......you might be okay. If there is ANY sign at all of rust forming, it'll creep quickly.
