That's typical of automatics. They can be rockets on short acceleration, but eventually, they can't keep up with the manuals.
The primary reason is the torque converter that connects the crankshaft of the motor to the input shaft of the transmission. While it is slipping, and the motor is going faster than the input shaft, the torque is being multiplied (hence the term "torque converter"). More power gets to the wheels, and - if you don't break the tires free - you accelerate faster.
Also, autos don't disconnect when shifting, and going 0-30, many manuals will need at least one shift.
The reason the stick will ultimately beat the auto has more to do with the number of gears than it does the turbo. The stick has one more gear, and probably a different final drive ratio. The reason for changing the turbo on the autos would be to keep owners from blowing up their autos...
