It's tight enough that I couldn't easily push it back in with my finger so I tapped on it with a wrench. Just a few light taps drove it in far enough so it meshed with the nylon gear again. The trick is knowing how far to tap it in so it gets full engagement. You have to hold it up to the edge of the visible nylon gear, look at the gap and guestimate how far it should stick out of the motor. As it turns out the end of the shaft should be almost flush with the back end of the motor.
