Change the brake fluid every two years. Do this religiously. More often, if you like. This involves bleeding fluid out at each caliper. Procedure differs, depending on which ABS system.
Change the pads when the friction material is the same thickness as the backing material.
Rebuilding front calipers should be very easy. Rears, not so much due to the e-brake. Parking brake cables should last you a while, although most folks will tell you not to use them in winter, because its easier for water to get in them and corrode them.
The only way to keep from replacing pads is to not use the car! Braking is done by friction, and something has to go away, either the pads or the rotors. Use a soft pad, the pads go away. Use a hard pad, and maybe the rotor goes too. Pads alone are cheaper than pads and rotors, let me tell you.
