The CEL might be due to corroded connectors on various temperature sensors on the engine. Last year the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) located between the cylinder 2 and 3 runners on the intake manifold caused poor gas mileage and a CEL on my car; a quick unplug/replug (with some contact cleaner spray) fixed the issue. You might also try this on the air temperature sensor in the aluminum air pipe that leads from the intercooler to the throttle body.
Not sure if the '97 cars still have the flash codes that display some basic faults with the key on before starting the engine.
