Makes sense.... Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 5 Oct 2010 18:19:11 In Reply to: Re: Possible turbo issue, Simon S, Tue, 5 Oct 2010 10:44:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had suspected PVC issues, simply because they're easy to check (start simple). There was no improvement at idle when I pulled the crank ventilation line off, and the valve is working fine.
The seal makes sense - I was thinking idle increasing vacuum and pulling oil out, but not thinking about exhaust pressure keeping it in. Good thought. That would also jive with my differential-cooling idea - the seal expands and contracts at a different rate, so a gap opens during a warm up and cool-down, but not when everything is either cold or hot.
I'm going to do some more poking, especially around the intake as suggested. I'll also do the simple thing - get the car to smoke, and then simply loosen the oil filler cap to release any crank pressure.
I know the turbo seal can be replaced, but I'm thinking with 150K miles, just put in a new (read- rebuilt) unit. I don't want to cheap out with just a seal, and then have the bearing go blooey in six months. Or replace the core, and find I've got clearance problems in the case.
Thanks for the input!
