It seems the bulb housings are fairly fragile and any small amount of wiggling might send the fault message to the pictogram.
I had this issue related to a partially loose brakelight bulb and the housing was melted. Replaced the inner housing and all is well.
You could always try turning the key to on, then removing the rear assembly and looking at the pictogram from the hatch area to see what induces the fault. Careful though; those little bulbs heat up fast and they'll burn you or melt holes in your hatch trim. Ask me how I know :)
