I was thinking maybe the thermostat? I seem to remember reading/hearing that when it opens completely to "overheat mode" it shuts off coolant flow to the heater core, so maybe it's faulty and doing this at a too low temperature? This fits with it only occuring once the temperature goes above a certain level and goes fast once the temp drops again. The radiator is original ('96 with ~110k miles). I noticed the radiator fan comes on and lights dimming when it does. Stuck in traffic and ambient temp around -10 C, I guess it's on for
20 seconds at a time every 5 minutes or so.
I did change the upper radiator hose and the hose from the block to the heater core last month, along with flushing the system and changing the coolant. I wanted to change the thermostat too but the housing bolts were completely seized in spite of soaking with penetrant and I didn't have a heat source or time to fiddle with it more at the time. I don't know when the thermostat was changed previously or if the bolts were over tightened, but I certainly didn't have that much trouble changing in on my previous 9000.
Doesn't air bubbles purge automatically? How does one get them out if not?
If the heater core was partially plugged, wouldn't the heat just be generally low instead of only when idling?
