15 inch tires on a 16 inch wheel?

Well it's time for new tires on my 1990 9KT, nothing fancy, just some all seasons. The tires that are on it now are 195/60 R15. The wheels measure 16 inches in diameter, and the factory tires are supposed to be 205/50 ZR16. I got these tires years ago at Town Fair, and didn't think too much about the size, I think they took the size off the old tires. I haven't really had too much trouble with the tires, and it rides fine, but wouldn't it be better to use tires of the appropriate width and diameter? Is this a common practice or did they just sell me tires they had in stock that were "close enough"? Thanks.
