Steve:
I nominate the oil pump cover o-ring as the likely candidate for cause of your massive oil leak, as it happened to me.
The old seal had hardened up like plastic and cracked through. Oil was practically running out in a stream while motor was running.
Toughest part of tackling this is probably cracking loose the crank bolt.
You have to jack car, remove RH front wheel, pull front inner fender liner, loosen serp belt tension and insert a tool to hold it slack, crack loose and remove crank pulley bolt (1 1/16" as I recall??), crank pulley slides right off, then easiest way to get massive snap ring out that holds oil pump cover is, pry one ear of it inward and get a small screwdriver under it and keep working it out of groove, with a few small screwdrivers, some to keep it wedged out, others to work on prying it further. It gets easier as you get more of it out, then at a point it will just snap out. Goes back in same way.
I can't even think where you'd buy an official internal snap ring plier tool big enough to handle it, let alone pay the cost. And then there's making it work.
Replace the front crank oil seal at same time of course.
An air impact wrench makes the crank bolt easy, otherwise you need a big breaker bar and some way to hold the motor, or to hold breaker bar while you crank motor briefly to snap the nut loose.
You should be able to wipe area clean to check first if it's the source of leak, and watch it while car runs.
Oil leak and alternator estimates both seem a little high to me, but my ideas of what shops do charge and need to charge are way out of date since I've been fixing everything myself for so long.
