The two little short pipes that as derf says connect the long heater hoses to the short sections that go onto the heater core are plastic and they tend to develop cracks and crumble apart. And, of course, leak coolant.
Your leak might actually be those short splice sections. If so you'll discover it if you go to do a bypass. In that case, no need to bypass, just replace them both - - if a stock size of copper tube fits, by all means use that.
