Disabling the tensioner might help, but ..Not.. wearing a belt is what immediately comes to my mind as solution.
Doing so however involves genuine faith in the Airbag system.
However early airbags have often proven dangerous in deployment.
Personally I'm a bit leery of the ones in our Saabs, and am seriously considering disabling the rascals in my car.
If memory serves, airbags were initially mandated to provide crash protection to the large population who habitually refused to use belts.
In theory then it could be either Belts or Bags as protection.
Notably current cars have evolved to 8 or 10 smaller and slightly gentler airbags. Arguably the protection afforded has been improved dramatically.
Not wearing a belt in a current vehicle, perhaps then becomes a more plausible option?
