ANY 9-5 he tries to push you into will be 10x the headache, and maintenance bill than your nice 1995 9000. 9-5's are cheap, they blow up, the engines sludge up ALL THE TIME, and they're far more difficult a car to work on than a 9000. 1) Your mechanic seems pushy. 2) $5000 in a new car will blow your budget. THEN DON'T DO IT.
The suspension geometry will not get messed up as indicated above. Let me search around and see what I can find, but do NOT throw away your car, or get pushed around simply because your mechanic isn't willing to tackle this job. Many have done it for a few hundred dollars at most. You can save yourself some money by removing the inner carpet, and floor from the trunk area to show a to-be welder what you've got for a situation, and save them disassembly time (not to mention it gets rid of any flamable fabric).
If you have found pics of what the area is SUPPOSED to look like, it should be a snap for a welder to put metal in there. The shock only needs 1 hole, so removing the shock and firming things up is a cinch.
If you love the car, and know its quirks & what not....don't be pushed into a 9-5. They are NOT a nice swedish car. They're a cheaped-out GM wanna-be.
Let me poke around on the interwebs and see if I can find some pics of a repaired car.
