Lost cause? 98 CSE

Hi, I bought a 98CSE in December '09. I purchased it from a used car dealer, and had it checked out at a Saab dealership. I don't have service records. The dealership didn't find anything wrong with it other than the axles were making noise when taking sharp turns. I had already replaced a number of the vacuum lines prior to driving the car to the dealer.
The car has about 140K miles on it, absolutely no rust and it seemed to run great and boost strong after replacing the vacuum lines.
I drove the car home about 800 miles with no problems at all. I didn't touch the car over the winter drove the car minimally over the summer, and didn't get around to the axles until late last fall. Had a few complications in changing the axles and didn't have it on the road again till this spring.
So this spring I took the car for a drive, a planned 60 mile round trip. But on the way back the car started making noises kind of like an exhaust leak. Wasn't really sure what was going on, I was a ways from home, and it was a Saturday night. So I couldn't find anyone to look at it immediately. Then the car starts driving really bad shaking and stalling.
I have it towed to my driveway. I thought it might be old gas, drained and changed filter, still bad. Compression test shows third cylinder at zero, all other cylinders very close to 150 +/- 5 psi.
Is it most likely a bad valve, all the spark plugs were black with carbon, maybe slightly oily.
Any suggestions as to what to do next to further diagnose?
Currently have a 900 with the head off, is it a similar process for the 9000 if it is a bad valve?
Thanks for your help,
Ron
