How to darken rocker panel pieces?

On my two '96s and I'm sure on most years of 9000s most everywhere, the rocker panel-side skirts and the panel behind the rear wheel have aged and oxidized and are an unsightly light gray.
I recently cleaned tar spots off one of them and used ThinX paint thinner and, with vigorous rubbing, it seems to have restored the original finish.
I doubt it will last. Does anyone know if it might, though, and is it worth doing over all the panels?
I had given up and was thinking I'd need to spray paint them all with bumper paint.
They seem to be some kind of polyethylene, quite flexible and waxy.
