Bad transmission or slave cylinder Posted by Daven [Email] (#290) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Daven) on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 15:38:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey all.
My 1995 9000 Aero 5spd will not go in or out of gear. This seems to happen more often when its 85 degrees and up. Sometimes, on a cool evening I can start the car and drive around the block once or twice. Other times, when the car won't go into any gear, I'll pop the hood, spray half a can of WD-40 onto the slave and throw-out bearing while the engine is idling. 75% of the time, this makes the problem go away.
I've not been driving the car since the problem started a week ago, just poking around trying to diagnose the problem. I've suspected transmission problems for a while now. The transmission's 3rd gear synchro has been bad from the day it came from Goldwing (the previous owner bought and installed it). But since I've owned the car, a clunk can be both heard and felt whenever going from neutral to 1st and again when first leaving a standstill in 1st gear.
On the day the transmission stopped functioning completely, I was driving in NYC. Approaching a red light in 2nd gear, I pushed the clutch and applied the brakes to stop, only the car wouldn't stop. It kept chugging forward and I couldn't get it out of gear. It seems odd to me that I could not force the transmission out of gear when, in the past, I've been able to knock it out of gear quite accidentally, even while under acceleration.
So I'm wondering if the issues I'm having are related to the slave alone or some internal problem in the transmission or all of the above PLUS a damaged shift-fork (which I was told might be part of the reason for a crunchy 3rd gear engagement).
I'm currently searching for a used 1994< manual transmission to replace my own. At the same time I will of course install a new throw-out bearing and slave cylinder, but I'd like anyones educated opinion as to whether there are other issues here.
Thanks very much!
