Thanks for the responses. I got the cable from The Saabsite. Bought it about 2 weeks ago, so maybe they have become backordered since.
I don't know if this is a common problem or not. I've owned this car since new and currently has just shy of 200K miles, and rust all over is becoming an issue. It's lived its entire life in the Boston area. I can tell you that it is pain to get at - my hands are all scrapped up today. Hopefully others won't have to deal with this. The Haynes manual gave it a 2 wrenchs rating - they must not have done it on a 14 year old rusty model.
I'll try the plastic threated nut this evening and hope that does it.
