The brakes ops check: good. Posted by John Fitzgerald [Email] (#77) [Profile/Gallery] (more from John Fitzgerald) on Wed, 7 Sep 2011 20:31:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Driving back from church tonight with my three daughters, about 2030, dark, just a couple miles from home, at 60 mph on a two lane state highway ... and a doe [a deer, a female deer] jumps out of the ditch one hundred? feet or so from the right front side.
I have not stood on the brakes in the Aero, ever, this hard in 25 years of driving 9000's. Anti skid cycled [sorry, thinking airplanes for a minute] and I think I heard at least one wheel start to lock up. Missed the doe by inches on the left front fender. Barely. Adrenaline flow: also ops checked 'good'. Fortunately nobody behind me, especially nobody busy texting or watching a dvd, etc. Otherwise they'd be in the hatch right now.
What little help I had from the rear brakes = better with the new set of rotors and pads put on last week. I'm pretty picky about bedding them in; nothing high tech about the hardware, though: brembo rotors and PBR DeLuxe pads. Thanks, eEuroparts. Tires are also fairly new; a few months ago anyway, and decent Continental all season rubber.
Can't afford to total this car, we use it too much. My wife's a swim coach and we probably put close to 60k mi the past three years. Bought in 2000 with approx 20k on it; need to teach my girls to drive with it [if they ever happen upon a stick shift in their driving careers, they won't be helpless]. No rust yet; driver's seat heater is the only inop item right now, just spent the afternoon putting new valve cover gaskets and 'distributor shaft plug' on ... "Only" need to get another 100,000 out of it ...
