I had this same problem with a shifter lock ring in my own 9000. Mine popped out on me right as I was making a right turn onto a street that was going uphill....that was sure fun trying to get it back into gear.
Instead of trying to figure out how to fix the later style shifter that came into use mid 1992 model year, I found an older shifter from a 1991 9000 at a junkyard and swapped it out.
I have not had any problems since...
