I actually owned my '91 164 S before buying my '97 9000 Aero. The cars may be similar in origin, but they feel like completely different cars. The Alfa's V6 is such a sweet engine, great noise, and looks great (those chrome headers!). My car has just 70k on it and still is on the original adjustable shocks (compared to the new Sachs shocks in my 9000). In Auto mode, it's a little Buick-y, but in Sport it firms up and is probably tighter than the Aero.

The cars are finicky and if they aren't driven, do get a bit grumpy. I just had new cams and valve caps done on my car to cure a loud ticking noise, as well as a new steering rack, as mine was leaking. I had driven it more than about two days over a 6 month period...which I'm sure didn't help.

However, I did a lot of work to it when I first got it (bushings, some electrical stuff), and I love it as much as I love the 9000. The 9000 is a better long distance cruiser...the Alfa seating position is for people with long arms and short legs...which I am not. However, with the new steering rack, new Z rated tires and the car in SPORT mode, the Alfa handles almost as well.

As for the electricals, I've replaced several power seat switches, the oil level sender twice, and that's about it. The climate control still works well, and everything else works, including the remote door locks/alarm.

My 164 is in excellent shape and gets a lot of compliments...where as the 9000 never gets a second glance. Drive it and see how you like it. Make sure to test all the electrics and listen for ticking behind the dash (stepper motors, which are a pain to replace).

Oh, and the back seat looks beautiful, but is remarkable tight..compared to the 9000 which is huge.

Cheers,
Paul H.
