After doing every small adjustment or replacement to convince myself that it wasn't the transaxle in grenade mode, I finally had to drop the car off with my technician; Rod Beckner in Jefferson Oregon.
Truth be told, the trans had me worried once or twice on the drive from Portland to Salem, but I just tried to focus on keeping the car moving. Car drove great in all gears, but just would not engage 4th still and I wasn't about to force it.
Rod removed the box and cracked it open to find that 4th gear was toast. Synchro and the gear were crunched. I was probably on borrowed time until FUBAR. He also noted I was down about a quart of oil (redline).
So, he's repairing my previously rebuilt box that ate the internal speedo gear. Glad I kept that one.
Just wanted to put some closure on this thread in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation.
...patiently waiting for my Aero to return.
