The other half is lubricating the latch assy with a white lithium grease. WD-40, etc, will not do it.
I guess the actuator starts having a harder time overcoming internal friction over the years. I've taken apart the whole inside of the rear hatch, looking for something broken/worn out. Everything works fine with the hatch open. Close it, and the same unlock/relock happens. Sprayed some great 3M multi-purpose light lube [higher priced WD-40 type spray] with no luck. Used white lithium spray grease: ahhh. Back to a 'real' unlock. Btw, the lithium grease is also a much better choice for all the door latches and the door stop arms. Let the door get too hard / stiff to open, and you risk breaking off the little door lock arm inside the handles.
Another cold weather factor is the lessened push from the lift shocks. New shocks or summertime heat improve the unlatching [lest a hard slam of the driver's door makes it settle back into 'locked'].
