According to the book, "The Saab Scania Story," development of the 9000, in terms of initial discussions, began in 1974 when the company decided it needed a larger, more luxurious car.
The first 9000 was unveiled in May 1984 and went on sale in Europe in the winter of 1984-85 as a 1985 model. It was first available in the US in 1985. All 9000s had a 16-valve engine either turbo or normally aspirated.
