If the tensioner shock is already tired, and the belt snaps or comes off and allows the tensioner shock to smash against its limit of travel (which is internal to that shock thingy), it can and will rip the piston rod out of the shock portion of the tensioner. From experience I can tell you that if nothing else is broken you CAN line the piston rod up straight with the hole its supposed to go into and then force it back together, but then the action of the shock is no longer. I'd advise replacing the tensioner at your earliest convenience if you decide to squash it back together.
Also if you do force it back together, be advised that it probably will blow apart again if you allow it to fully extend while the belt is off. The bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley is left hand thread (backwards) so if you can have a helper hold the tensioner compressed with a breaker bar and 19mm on that bolt, while you put the belt back on, no Mythbuster shenanigans will be necessary.
There is a bracket tool you're supposed to affix to the tensioner when the belt is off to prevent it from resting against its limit of travel.
