I broke the rubber sleeve down by the caliper which encases and protects the cable from weather and 6 months later, that barrel snapped off, leaving me e-brakeless on one side. Last week I replaced the passenger side cable and it was more involved than I had expected.
I would recommend checking the caliper end (like Ray and Ken suggested) and also unscrew that bristled bracket up by the e-brake lever. Just a small torx and be gentle while removing that bracket. Its fragile! You'll have limited visibility but by looking at both ends, you can determine your next move. Theres not much force put on the sheath which is anchored in front (under a plate beneath the carpet) so no need to dig there unless you will replace the cable. Good luck
