Today, just past 10 months since I fixed my turn signals by re-soldering terminals on the flasher relay, I had to do it again.
For the past several days the right turn flasher has worked only some of the time. I tried re-plugging it but that wasn't it.
So I pulled it and got out the soldering pencil and Kesters, and did it all over again. Re-flowed the three terminals at the contact end of each of the relays, and the two terminals at the coil ends, as well as all of the terminals where the pins are soldered to the board edge. Couldn't see any problems with any of my earlier solder efforts.
Plugged back in and working fine.
This time I used a single-edged razor blade to carve away two of the three plastic lips that catch and hold the cover onto the relay bottom. Too hard prying on all three if I ever need to get it apart again, and one holds it just fine.
Really, the easiest soldering I ever did was when I had a Weller commercial soldering station, picked up used. But it was so old that when its element burned out Weller no longer sold any parts for it. The tips of these stupid little pencils from Radio Shack get all corroded and no longer want to carry or melt solder. File them clean and they soon corrode again. I may finally one day spring for the real thing brand new.
