I haven't done this but HAVE pulled part of the trim strip back out of the way in assessing whether to replace a tree-smashed windshield. When I saw the bad rust in the lower pan and bottom edge where windshield sits I decided instead to take the insurance money and move on.
There was soft-urethane goo all over the lip of the trim strip that tends to get all over you and the car itself. Have solvent handy.
The windshield needs to be cut out with a wire. Visit a NAPA and they sell the stuff, stranded stainless steel. Drill holes in two blocks of wood and wrap the ends through that and use them for handles, one inside, one out, to "saw" through the urethane holding it in. Could be a two-man job. You first have to poke a hole through the adhesive somewhere to start an end of the wire through. It will even cut through the setting blocks, hard rubber pieces on bottom edge, but it's better to cut up to them and then re-start on other side, so they can be reused.
You have to pry the side-pillar trim off on the inside, and remove wipers and the front pan down below things outside, as well as the trim strip, first of all.
