Lazy Man's Front Hub Replacement

It was my plan to replace my front hubs myself. No problem loosening the axle nut and taking off the disc/caliper but the ABS sensor bolt head looks like a relic from the Titanic and before I try to find the other end of the sensor cable I wouder if the steering knuckle really has to come off - if I cut down an Allen key to loosen the cap screws holding the hub to the steering knuckle, is it not possible to coax the hub off the driveshaft with the knucle still attached to the strut/control arm/tie rod?
