It could be anything from a worn shock mount, to an A-arm bushing, to a ball-joint, or due to a broken shock absorber that has given up. I had Bilstein HD's (heavy dutys) all around on my old '92 9kt and had a banging noise from the front left as well. I found that the shock had pissed-out all the gas/fluid and that the banging noise was caused by the shock bottoming out every small bump I hit.
Jack the car up and shake the wheel to see if its the ball joint (if the wheel moves laterally or jiggles at all you need new ball joints & might as well replace tie rods too and get an alignment while you're at it). If, with the car sitting naturally, it bounces when you quickly apply and release pressure to that corner, you need new shocks. If your ball joints are good but you feel a chatter or audible vibration over rough roads, replace the front shock bushings.
