Based on my experience, I agree that you may have a deteriorated foam surround on the speaker. An easy way to check is to park the car in a dark area and shine a bright light from underneath the speaker (maybe through the tool kit door or the small hole under the speaker?). Look through the speaker grille from above - if you can see any light the surround is gone and needs to be replaced. I bought a pair on Ebay for a few dollars and repaired them on my car - huge increase in bass response with a sealed speaker!
