I did the conversion on my '92 9000CD about 5 years ago, about the same way you did. I get cold air even this week when it was nearly 100. In hot, humid weather it's important to use it in recirculation mode so make sure the recirc motor is working by doing a visual check. I have to add a little (4 oz.) R134 each year to compensate for losses, probably from older seals in the compressor because I see no signs of leaks elsewhere. I don't imagine going that many years without using the AC helped your seals, but sounds like it should work. Might want to stock up on 134 as it's being phased out and will get more expensive every year.
