First thing I would do is a lot of searching on this web site, there are descriptions of this tranny and several of its trouble modes.
One of those I found is a PDF of a service bulletin from the Automatic Transmission Service Group. It mentions one reverse problem that is deeply internal, a bushing that shifts inside the reverse drum and blocks oil holes. If that's your problem it needs either a rebuild or a good used tranny to fix.
But I can't recommend the guy (name escapes me) at Eriksson enough. He's very generous, helpful, and knows these trannies thoroughly. Give him exact details of what's going wrong and I'm sure he'll tell you what the problem is. If it's something you can do yourself, they will sell you the parts. If it needs more and you decide on a rebuild, Eriksson is highly recommended.
There are some things that can be done by removing the cover and valve body from top of tranny, such as various accumulator springs and seals. That's relatively light work that can be done by removing battery and battery tray; needs utmost cleanliness and care however.
Good luck.
